Jule III is at Bennett Brothers but Bob went to Deale MD to help Jaren move his Mainship 40 to Jacksonville NC where he and Nancy were doing the right thing for their son and his family. It took almost a week to get MV NanSea D fixed of all her little problems. Finally last Monday, we left Herring Bay for Reedville VA. NanSea D was a pretty speedy trawler and at 9 knots, Reedville was an easy day trip.
However, the weather did not want us to leave for four days and so we stayed. We visited a very nice maritime museum which depicted the menhaden industry in the area. None of the restaurants would open for a couple of days, so Jaren became the cook. Finally, we went to Tommy's one day and the Crazy Crab the next. We saw the expression, "Save the Stack" everywhere around the town. We discovered that one of the abandoned menhaden smoke stacks was rebuilt and refurbished. It is a very impressive sight, especially at night.
Saturday, we left Reedville and hoped to spend the night at Hospital Point. However, NanSea D was fast. We passed Hospital Point around 1430, passed through the Gilmerton bridge just in time to miss the closing of the Norfolk and Southern Bridge #5. We knew we could not make the Deep Creek lock in time so we just 'putzed' up the creek and planned to anchor before the lock. We realized that we might have a prayer of making the locking at 1530 so we called Robert and asked if we had a prayer. He said, 'you always have a prayer' Ten minutes later were were going up the 9 feet with 4 other boats. We found a place to tie up along the canal as darkness approached. Not bad
The next day, we headed for Elizabeth City where we spent the night at the Pelican Marina. Bob had a great time talking to our old friends at the marina. The following day found us at R.E Mayo in Hobucken. There are new owners of the facility and there were signs of construction but nobody was around. We had to hide in the boat as the monster mosquitoes were out in force. This boat is fast! The last night on the water was at Dudley's Marina where we had to tie inside the T-head dock which limited our options for the next day. Today we waited until 1000 for the current to go slack and (with the help of the staff), we got back to the ICW without hitting anything. An uneventful drive to Jacksonville climaxed our voyage on the NanSea D. Jaren became an ICW voyager. He 'did good'!
