We left the anchorage at 0700 with favorable but
boisterous weather out of the ESE. Hopefully, we would arrive at the
C&D Canal before it backs to the north. The trip through the Cape May
Canal was uneventful until the ferry made some unrecognized whistle
signals and backed out of her slip. Lets see, big boat, bad current,
shallow water ... not good. We placed Jule III in reverse, let the nice
ferry leave her mooring, and we were on our way.

The Delaware Bay wasn't so bad
close to shore but got a bit bumpy and gusty as we headed for the
shipping channel near the Miah Maull Shoal lighthouse. We were sailing
jib and jigger and averaging 6.5 kts STW and 7.5-8.5 kts SOG. This
sailing stuff is not so bad. But wait, the wind is started to back to
the NNE. Fortunately, it stayed NNE but the waves starting piling up.
Not as much fun now.

As we approached Reedy Island, it was clear that the
anchorage was not viable as the weather was deteriorating further. We
entered the C&D knowing that we would have to find an anchorage in the
Chesapeake after dark. Canal passage was great as there was little
traffic and a nice favorable current. The Chesapeake City anchorage was
a bit too shallow for Moony so we continued. Before we left the canal,
the sun deserted us and it was dark. We found a nice anchorage just north of
the Bohemia River just off the channel. Not bad.
