2 May 2012, Heading for the Neuse with Endaxi, 34 54.48 N/ 076 45.552 W

Yesterday we left the Bight at 0915 and spent about 15 minutes getting the mud off of the anchor. We must of found one of the few muddy patches on the Bight. Wind was light out of the east but it gave us yet another opportunity for a slow motorsail to the Neuse. The current changed in our favor as we met the Beaufort Inlet channel. Capt. Ann was doing the driving and no 'Crazy Ivans' (a rapid change in course and speed as defined in the movie, "Hunt for Red October") yet. Actually Bob is the 'Crazny Ivan' driver.
Sadly, the current started to slow as we passed the commercial docks near the tall Rte. 70 bridge. We had to slow our approach to the bridge as a really large tanker was being nudged towards the eastern commercial docks. After we passed under the bridge, we heard Endaxi (Bob and Sally) on the VHF. We decided to meet for the night at Club Foot Creek (where is CFC, anyways). They we about an hour ahead of us. We were greeted with a foul current as we entered Adams Creek, at time, 2 kts. This was not good! Plus the day was hot and humid.
We entered the Neuse around 1600 where afterwards we headed West for a bit. The weather continued to deteriorate with greying skies and occasionally gusty winds. Once we were abeam of the CFC, we headed for its entrance. Channel was well marked but had some pretty skinny shoulders. We passed by Endaxi and anchored a couple hundred meters from Endaxi. We anchored in 7 ft of water which is about as deep as it gets here. Once we got all settled, we gave Endaxi a call on the VHF.
Bob and Sally invited us over for drinks and snacks. Only trouble is that we had to get there. By then, it was blowing a good 15 kts so it turned out to be a good row upwind to their boat. Success! Bob took our line and soon we were all in their cockpit. It is been a while since we have seen them. We first met sharing a mooring ball at Vero Beach in late 2009. We traveled to George Town together (sort of). Good people and they get us tee shirts too!
Swab Sammy Jane got a bit excited about her deck walk this morning. She did not want to go in before anchor weighing time. She was sent back to the cabin which she protested. Anchor up at 0730 where we followed our track back out the channel. Endaxi was already in deep water. First time this season we went aground. Doesn't hardly seem fair. Chart says 9 feet, mark says 9 feet, depth sounder says 5 feet. Fortunately, we got off the shoal without much difficulty.

7 May 2012, A week in New Bern, 35 06.108 N/ 077 02.454 W

We actually sailed most of the way from CFC to the Grand Marina in New Bern. Endaxi stayed ahead of us all the way which was good as we had never been to this marina before. We both got through the opening of the bascule bridge so we were a bit bunched up approaching the marina. Endaxi went first and got a slip on the inside of the 'attenuator" (their word not mine). We were assigned a slip near the end of B dock. Tight turn but we did not hit anything. Not bad.
The Endaxi crew would be heading home in a short while, so we crammed a lot in a few hours. We had lunch at one of the quaint restaurants downtown, did some window shopping, picked up a rental car for Endaxi, and then headed back to the marina to say goodbye. We hope to see them sometime this summer and during the next cruising season. We headed back to the boat and tucked ourselves in for the night.
A couple days later, we rented a car and explored New Bern and the countryside. We went to Oriental, Bayboro, and places we never heard of before. Bob found some zincs at half the price we pay at West Marine. The next day, Butch and Vicki of SV Legend came by to visit. We were lucky that they were in town as they spend most of their time in Deale MD. Sadly, they had to leave and get ready for drive back to Deale.
So, what else did we do during our stay in New Bern. Ann and Sammy were practicing their new favorite activity: napping. Bob had to generate and print some stuff for his USCG license renewal. The marina office was helpful in faxing the paperwork to USCG. Later, Bob would discover that he had to have another heart test. Yes, he finally got his credential two months later. Tomorrow we will leave to Hobucken and R.E. Mayo. We had hoped to go further, but the weather will turn foul tomorrow in the PM.
