24 Jan 2012, Hunting Island State Park, 32 23.352 N/ 080 25.918 W

Hunting Island is one of our favorite parks. RV Jule III stopped by Beaufort while RV Moony headed directly for the park. We ate at Luther's and visited the city marina for old times sake. The marina was looking pretty good and there was one late cruiser on the facedock. We chatted a bit. Afterwards, we headed to the Park where we were greeted to an approaching fog bank. Fog did not stop the Firemeister and we had a nice evening fire.
The next day we decided to head to the lighthouse which was a bit of a hike. The forest was quite mature and the forces of the sea have not seen this area for some time. The dunes formed rather substantial hills here. We would find out later that Bob picked up a hitchhiker in the brush here; a rather feisty tick that would be detected for nearly a week.
Ann and Wolfgang were brave. They hiked up the lighthouse while Bob and Denise research the land below. My, it looks like quite a distance up there. After bragging about their adventure, we headed back to the campground where we would meet Butch and Vicki and we would become the Three RVs.

27 Jan 2012, Onward to Jekyll Island, 31 06.354 N/ 081 24.738 W

The Three RVs headed south diverting for a quick stop in Savanna where we walked the streets towards the waterfront. That is where we met the maiden waving at the departing ships. We don't know too much about the legend but there she was. From the looks of her, she has been there for a while.
Campground here in Jekyll might become one of our favorites. RV Jule, RV Moony, and RV Legend are in adjoining sites in a heavily treed (pines and palms) environment. Not bad. Yesterday, we rented bicycles and explored the island. One of our first stops was driftwood beach near the northeast tip of the island. There, we could see some truly remarkable scenes of island evolution.
The gang stopped for a breather at the local marina. The day's weather was a bit nippy but not bad for late January. Poor Ann is not in many of the pictures as she is the primary photographer of this mission. She resists pictures of herself. That should change soon. Quite a motley crew, Si?
Miniature golf in January was more than interesting ... it was a lot of
fun. We all were really bad but who was counting. We played the 'pro' course where we were anything but pros. Afterwards, we headed for the Dairy Queen where we all loaded up on Blizzards or similar health food goodies.
As the sun was getting ready to set, we headed for the really big fishing pier near the northern point of the island. There is a narrow channel that heads out to the ocean and large vessels from mainland pass through on a regular basis. They do get close to each other and the pier. We had an interesting sunset there where a strange halo covered the setting sun. The photograph did a proper job of capturing the phenomenon. No green flash afterwards though.
The Three RVs did not move the three days we were here. Butch and Vicki slept in a tent rather than in their conversion van. The Firemeister kept the fires blazing each evening and the last night saw hot dogs and marshmallows burning. Are they supposed to turn black? Ann and Bob skipped the black marshmallows and kept their hot dogs less than crispy.
Did we mention the Dairy Queen. The first time visit was part of an healthy exercise program with a bit of sin mixed in. Here you can see the fleet of rented bicycles. The second visit had similar goals but we forgot the healthy exercise program. However, it was just as rewarding. With all good things, time is running out on our second land voyage. Ann, Bob, Vicki, and Butch will head back to their respective homeports while Denise and Wolfgang will continue their journey South to Mickey Mouse land and points west. This RV stuff is not bad!
