Left for the Lakes at 0900 in the fog. Fog cleared once
we got on the big road. Our first stop (other food and pottie) was Isle
de Madame, the home of the 'kids' we met on Calista at Shelburne. The
island is not very far from St. Peter's where the canal leads from the
Atlantic to the Bras d'Or. We got to the island at 1430 but no 'kids'.
We talked to a young lady at their yacht club and she said "they haven't
arrived yet. Oh well, maybe we will see Annick and Giles on another
trip. We left the island and headed for Bras d'Or Lakes Inn which is
located on the Lake side of the canal. Very neat.
After a great meal and night's sleep, we
headed for the northern town of Louisburg to see the Fortress
Delouisborge near Sydney. Along the way we were treated to great views
of the lakes. There were a few sailboats traversing the waterways but
we wondered where the anchorages and hidey-holes were. No matter as we
were in a car. Arrived at the fortress (do you know the difference
between a fort and a fortress?) at 1000, just in time to see canon fire
and musket smoke. The fortress was a French outpost the was destroyed
by the English in the mid 18th century. As funding becomes available,
the fortress is being resurrected. Not bad!
At 1330 we turned the car around, and asked Betty (Waze
app) to get us back to Lunenburg. She decided to take us on a tour of
the other side of the Lakes. We could say the we pretty much
circumnavigated them We did not get back to Lunenburg until 2000. It
almost was a running lights type of dinghy ride back home.
We stayed three more nights in Lunenburg,
then we made our return trip to Shelburne via Port Mouton. Uneventful
two days with light SW winds and flat seas. We could only spend one
night in Shelburne this time so we had to get our goodby hugs as soon as
wee arrived. Tomorrow we will head out for Rockland, ME. Sad.
