This mini cruise would be the last of our
re-commissioning shakedown tests. We wanted to be
sure that all systems worked OK. They didn't. We
sailed with S/V BRASS RING destined for the
Wye River. Our son, Chris, with his dog Gina,
traveled with us. We wanted to test our anchoring
techniques including electrical usage and doggy dinghy-ing. We got a late
start so we had to select an
alternative anchorage for the first night
. We arrived at
Tilghman Creek at nightfall and Chris and Bob had to
take the 'kids' to the beach in the dark. Of course we
landed in the shallowest part of the beach area where
we went aground in the dinghy 100 feet from shore. In
the end, the mission was a success and the 'kids' were
happy. The next day, we headed for Shaw Bay in the
Wye River.
We left Tilghman Creek at 1030 after
a lazy morning on the hook. We took the 'kids' back to
the beach around 0830 but this time we picked a
better landing point. Tilghman Creek is a quiet and
scenic anchorage where one can see the watermen
running their crab lines, hear the swans as they fly
overhead, and enjoy the relative solitude of a
uncrowded anchorage.
Winds were out of the East and 5 kts
and (of course) were going East. So the short
trip to the Wye River was totally a motoring experience.
Our starter is getting a work out and so far so good.
We anchored with S/V BRASS RING towards the
eastern side of Shaw Bay (better doggy dinghying). The
bay was relatively free of other boats but this would
change as the holiday weekend (Memorial Day)
continued.
Later in the day, M/V NanSea D joined
our little get together. Jaren and Nancy pumped up their dinghy and came by
for a visit. This was there first
voyage in their 'seasoned' dink. They are contemplating
a larger dinghy in the future (and maybe an outboard too).
M/V NanSea D may be joining us for part of our trip
South this fall.
Later that day, Pete and Karen Cook
invited us aboard BRASS RING for drinks and snacks.
This was their first real weekend out on their Hans Christian 33T. Their
kids (Jenny and James) were
having a great time exploring the ay in their dinghy and
kayak. The weather on the Western Shore was a bit
nasty over the weekend but none of it arrived at
our anchorage to mess up our fun.
S/V MAGIC arrived on Sunday ready
to raft up. We had to tell them 'no joy' on the raft due
to the doggy dinghy ramp. They invited us over for
drinks and we delivered the teak planking that Ren
wanted for his woodworking projects. We were quite
a site carrying 16 foot teak planks on our dinghy as
we motored over to MAGIC. We plan to travel with
MAGIC down to the Space Coast of Florida this
Fall.
