We
visited Janet and Blaine Parks aboard the S/V
Charbonneau several times. They were the ones that we
so kind to feed us the day we arrived. They have a fully equipped
Island Packet 40 (1999). Blaine was the guardian of the
anchorage. He helped us with our anchorage, he tried to rescue a
boat that had slipped anchor, and provided fish to those of us
fishing challenged. We found all sorts of neat facts on their
boat, their trip and goals at http://www.sailcharbonneau.com.
One
evening, Blaine and Ren (S/V Magic) swapped beer for
lobster with the local watermen (Ren brokered lobster for us). We
decided to have a cook-out at the Fort. Chef Ren was volunteered
to execute and cook our live lobster. The rest of us volunteered
to sit around and watch. The lobster eaters included Ren and Barb
(S/V Magic); Toby, Ann, and Bob (S/V Jule III);
Janet and Blaine (S/V Charbonneau). Picture courtesy of
Janet and Blaine.
We
almost forgot about the other senior members of the crew of S/V
Charonneau; two Golden retrievers named Max and Bailey. We
got our 'doggy fix' through these guys. Turns out we met them
before at St. Augustine. They were playing ball at the City Dock
while we were there. We didn't realize until much later that they
were the same dogs. They are well skilled on the boat (wish ours
were) and can get in and out of the dingy under most conditions.
A
few days later, we all visited Loggerhead Key which as about 5 nm
northwest from our anchorage. We anchored about 100 yars from the
western shore of the key. Blaine, Janet, Toby, and Pat (S/V
Tell Me Something Good) went snorkeling while Ann and Bob
dingyed to shore to explore the island. We met a volunteer
caretaker (from Alaska) who tended to the needs of the lighthouse
for a two month tour.
More
'doggy fixes' for Ann! We really missed Levi, Gina, and Samantha
Jane (ah yeah, our kids too). Max and Bailey were our first
encounters with pets since our departure from Port Canaveral. We
promised ourselves that we would train Levi and Gina to be good
boat dogs (No luck so far). Maybe we get Max, Bailey, Levi, and
Gina together so that they can swap boat techniques. On-board
bathroom techniques is the most difficult to learn (for our
dogs).
